How to add anchor links in Squarespace

Earlier this year (2025) Squarespace introduced a built in anchor link feature which makes the process of linking to specific sections within a page a lot easier. Before this new feature was rolled out, we would have to use a code block to create anchor links, which was time consuming and more complicated. But with this new feature, we can now add anchor links to our websites directly through the section editor. I’m going to show you exactly how easy it is in this blog post. But before we get started…

What is an anchor link?

An anchor link, also known as a jump link or page jump, is a type of link that directs users to a specific section of the same web page, rather than directing them to a completely different web page.

How are anchor links different from other links?

An anchor link moves the user within the same web page, whereas regular hyperlinks take users to an entirely different web page or website.

Hyperlinks require a full page transition and reload, whereas anchor links provide an instant jump to relevant content. This improves user experience as it’s more seamless.

Why Use Anchor Links?

Anchor links are especially useful on longer web pages like a homepage, sales page or any other page with multiple subtopics. Anchor links can:

  • Improve user experience by allowing users to jump to the content that is relevant to them without excessive scrolling.

  • Organise content structure when used to create a table of contents on a particular webpage.

  • Increase conversions by guiding users to take a specific action like book a call or sign up to an email list.

  • Enhance SEO if the anchor text contains relevant keywords. They help search engines like Google what your website and content is all about.

How to Add Anchor Links in Squarespace

Here is the services page of The Essential Template (which will soon be available for free). I want to add anchor links from the three buttons in the top section to their corresponding service sections. So I want to link the SERVICE 1 button to the section that is titled SERVICE 1 etc.

This will mean that if someone clicks on the button they will immediately be taken to the service that they are interested in without having to scroll or spend time looking for the information that they need.

Anchor links on a Squarespace template
  1. Name your anchor link

Click on EDIT SECTION for the section that you want your anchor link to jump to.

Scroll down to the bottom. There is a field called ANCHOR LINK. Type in the name you want to give that section. I’ve used service1 but you could use something more descriptive.

Name the anchor link

2. Copy the anchor link

Before you click out, hit the COPY icon next to the name you have given that section.

3. Attach the anchor link

Scroll back up and click on the button or highlight the text that you want to attach the anchor link to. Click on the pencil icon to edit.

Click on ATTACH LINK.

Paste in the anchor link that you copied before. It should have this format pagename#anchorlink. It will look like this:

4. Save and test the anchor link

Hit SAVE in the top left corner.

Open your website in preview mode and click on the anchor link you created to test it.

Can I use Anchor Links anywhere on my Squarespace website?

Currently, Squarespace only supports anchor links in the following sections:

  • Block sections

  • Auto layout sections

  • Course sections

  • Gallery sections

  • Video sections

It’s not possible to add anchor links to blog, events, portfolio, or store sections. But there is a workaround. You can create an anchor link in a blank section above an unsupported section. I have outlined the steps below.

How to link to sections that don’t support anchor links in Squarespace

  1. Add a blank section above the section you want to link to

  2. Follow the steps above to set up the anchor link to lead to this blank section.

  3. To avoid a gap created by the blank section, click the blank section, then Edit Section, and toggle Fill Screen off.

  4. Click Save.

Anchor links on Your Squarespace Website - The Bottom Line

Anchor links are super easy to add onto a Squarespace website. You just need to follow the steps above - no coding or technical knowledge is required. I recommend anchor links are used on longer website pages such as a homepage, sales page, landing page or any other page that has several subtopics.

Anchor links are great from a user perspective. Not only do they make the design of a webpage cleaner and more streamlined, but it allows website visitors to jump to the content that they want to read without the need to scroll.

If you want to map put your entire homepage you can download this free Homepage Content Planner and plan where you can put anchor links on the page to help your website visitors.
