How to Add a Favicon in Squarespace

How to add a favicon in Squarespace

“Favicon” is short for “favourite icon” and it is a small icon that appears in the web browser’s address bar next to the page’s title. Favicons help your website users identify your website at a glance, especially if they have several tabs open at the same time. Favicons are also a key element in branding and when designed with your branding elements, they can work to strengthen your brand identity and create a more professional online presence.

The default favicon for all Squarespace websites is a grey cube. It’s uninspiring and generic, and all it tells your website users is that your website has been built on Squarespace. It doesn’t help your website stand out or reinforce your brand.

Designing a favicon is easy on platform like Canva which offers templates and easy to use tools. Adding a Favicon in Squarespace is a very simple and quick process, and I recommend that everyone with a Squarespace website designs and uploads their own favicon.

Things to consider when designing your favicon:

  • Size - your favicon will be displayed at 16px x 16px, but the size of the actual file can be up to 300px x 300px.

  • Format - .png is the most user friendly format for your favicon, but it could also be in .ico format.

  • Design - A favicon is small so the design shouldn’t look cluttered or messy. Less is more here - stick to clean lines or a single symbol.

  • Brand consistency - Your favicon should include elements from your branding so there is a connection to your brand identity. This could be through the use of colours, fonts or graphic elements.

Simple, right?

Your favicon may not appear straight away in browser windows. This can take up to a few weeks so it’s best to add your favicon at the beginning stages of your website design process.

Adding a Favicon in Squarespace - The Bottom Line

Adding a favicon to your Squarespace website may seem like a tiny detail, but it is significant. Designing and uploading a favicon will only take 15-20 minutes but it has a big impact on how your website users view your website and your brand as a whole. Adding a favicon shows that you pay attention to the smallest of details. And if your favicon is designed well with a connection to your brand, it works to strengthen your brand identity and build trust with your website users.
